B/X Essentials: Revised Core Rules TOC Preview

I just reached a milestone in my work on the revised edition of B/X Essentials: I've finished the initial layout pass on the revised Core Rules!

Here's a preview of the table of contents, so you can see what's included and how much space it takes up.

The revised Core Rules will go on to form the basis for the mythical all-in-one hardback edition. Here's where the extra bits of content will be inserted to form the all-in-one book:

In conclusion: this is going to be awesome!

  1. Niiice. I love the changes. Always felt funny to leap from ability scores to air travel to chases.

    1. Haha, yes! I totally know what you mean. That's one big advantage of the new organisation by topic.

  2. Is this “all-in-one” hardcover book going to be print-on-demand like Essentials, or will it be sized/constructed like some better LotFP books?

    1. It's going to be produced as a proper print run, going for high quality.

    1. Haha, my commiserations!

I could have just done a quick "shove all of the original five books back to back and set it up as print-on-demand" job, but I had so many ideas for improving on the originals that I couldn't resist doing a full revision of everything. It's going to be totally worth the wait!

  5. Something I was just looking for in my editions and not finding, so in case it hasn't been addressed in Errata: I can't find where it says what the base unarmored AC is with these rules (I always forget whether it is 10 or 9). I'm assuming 9 since that's what some clearly unarmored "monsters" have (like Medium or Normal Human), but it's not listed with the Armor under equipment and I don't see it in the combat section under attacking and it's not under the character creation step for AC. Not sure where else it would be, but I think it would be helpful under the equipment armor table and in the character creation section.

    1. Yep, all known errata is being fixed in the new editions. The list of known errata is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ejoDZoj9LO1wVy3FYJ84guPIjTnOhMR5epJjnLRJX8w/edit?usp=drivesdk.

The AC 9 thing is already in the list and has been fixed. (Also fixed in the current edition PDFs.)

If you spot anything else, please don't hesitate to report it :)

  6. Hi there, I'm hoping you might include a list of monsters by hit dice, and a separate list of monsters with special abilities by hit dice? It would be really convenient for building encounters and compiling custom random encounter tables.

Also, if anyone is interested, the DragonQuest rule book from the 80's has a simplified THAC0 formula: Roll higher than 19 - Attack Bonus (ie. Str) - target AC. Might be easier than referencing tables and long THAC0 lists.

    1. That's a good idea about the monster listings by HD. The revised books will be manufactured by a different printer to the original ones, so the extremely strict page count limit that I hit with the original monsters book won't be an issue this time. There'll be space for extras.

  7. Gavin (as a btw), when I purchased B/X Essentials from LuLu, they appear to only have three of them: Core Rules, Cleric & Magic User Spells, Classes & Equipment (1,2,3), and nothing else. Not sure if you realized this or not...

    1. Yeah, I never got around to seeings up the subsequent books at Lulu. Now I'm working on the revised editions, so it doesn't seem worth setting up the old ones now.
